Ozone Therapy

Dr. Robinson is excited to announce a new therapy available to your pets. Dr. Robinson just completed theoretical and practical applications training in Medical Ozone and Prolozone Therapy.

What is ozone?

Oxygen is normally present in the air as a pair of oxygen atoms ( 02), because this is the most stable way for oxygen atoms to exist. Ozone gas is composed of three oxygen atoms (03), with the addition of the third oxygen atom this molecule is relatively unstable. This unstable quality of 03 gives it remarkable medical properties and can be considered "supercharged oxygen". Ozone is made by passing medical grade oxygen gas (02) through a specialized chamber that breaks up the 02 molecules into single oxygen molecules, which then quickly reassemble into 02 and 03.

The History of ozone therapy

Ozone was first-discovered in the late 1800's. The first uses were technological, the most common usage being the purification of water. Today, major cities all around the world use ozone to purify drinking water, Ozone has the unique property that literally all microbes are susceptible to its oxidizing powers without the development of resistance. Because of these remarkable antiseptic qualities, it was used successfully to treat infected wounds during the first world war. The wide spread medical use of ozone was first developed in Germany in the early 1950's. Today medical ozone therapy is common throughout Europe and is gradually spreading to the United States over the last 15 years.

What is Prolozone Therapy?

Prolozone is a homeopathic/oxygen injection technique developed and pioneered by Dr. Shallenberger. Prolozone is derived from the Latin word "Proli" which means to regenerate or rebuild, and the word ozone. Ozone is the most highly active form of oxygen in the universe. Prolozone uses the power of oxygen to cause damaged tissues, joints, ligaments, and tendons to regenerate. It is excellent for all forms of musculoskeletal and joint pain.

How does Prolozone work?

The reason that some injuries completely heal and others don't has to do with circulation. In order for a damaged area of the body to regenerate and heal, it must have the critical elements that only the blood can provide: vitamins, minerals and oxygen. Of these, by far the most important is oxygen. Low levels of oxygen cause an accumulation of lactic acid, which is what causes pain. Prolozone works in three ways. First, homeopathic anti-inflammatory medications are injected into the injured area to reduce inflammation and swelling. This leads to increased circulation. Next, the area is treated with vitamins and minerals that are critical for healing. And finally, the area is infiltrated with oxygen in the form of ozone. The result is that the tissues get what they need to heal. And as they heal, the circulation to the area is re-established and the treatment is complete. The response to treatment varies, but usually improvement is seen from 3-5 treatments.

Acupuncture Veterinary Therapy

The ancient art of acupuncture is progressively being integrated into western veterinary medicine. Acupuncture has been used to heal animals and humans in China for thousands of years. According to the Chinese, health is defined as smooth, harmonious flow of Qi. Qi is defined as the circulation of energy or life force along well defined channels on the skin surface called meridians. These meridians connect internally to the organs, muscles, joint structures and the nervous system.

Acupuncture can be used as the only method of treatment or can be combined with other treatment modalities, such as chiropractic, herbs, homeopathy and/or nutritional support. Acupuncture may also be combined with conventional western treatment modalities to enhance the bodys' response to treatment or manage pain following surgery.

How will my pet tolerate acupuncture?

Acupuncture is most often performed with sterilized thin stainless steel needles. There is occasionally a brief moment of sensitivity as the needle penetrates the skin in certain sensitive areas. Once the needles are in place, most animals relax, often falling asleep during treatment. Some animals with higher anxiety or extreme fear will require more coaxing but they will often become increasingly more relaxed with each subsequent treatment.

Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies utilized if practiced by a competent acupuncturist. Occasionally an animal's condition may deteriorate temporarily before improving. Because acupuncture balances the body's own system of healing and no chemicals are administered, complications rarely, if ever develop.

Spinal Manipulation Therapy

The science of spinal manipulation therapy(chiropractic) involves the relationship between the spinal column and the nervous system and the crucial role this relationship has in the maintenance of overall health. The vertebrae of the spinal column assist in supporting the head and provide attachment points for the muscles responsible for locomotion. Nerve impulses travel from the brain down the spinal cord to all parts of the body as well as bring nerve impulses from the body back to the brain. The nervous system is responsible for initiating and coordinating movement and for integrating all the physiologic activities of the body.

Most people are familiar with the term subluxation, which is an area of the spine which is slightly misaligned which prevents the correct movement of the vertebra(e). These subluxations can also impinge on nerves that exit the vertebrae which causes interference with the nerve transmission to the parts of the body innervated by these particular spinal nerves. Thus, when vertebrae are subluxated, the receptors that would normally fire will not and this causes decreased responses of both sensory and motor pathways.

By using spinal manipulation to restore a full and pain-free range of motion to the joints of the spine and extremities we can increase an animal's flexibility and performance, enhance an animal's quality of life and help treat a variety of conditions that are commonly treated with drugs or surgery. Due to the spines intimate relationship with the nervous system, spinal manipulation therapy can also affect the health and function of internal organs through neuropsychological pathways.

Veterinary spinal manipulation therapy ( VSMT) includes all procedures where the hands are used to mobilize, adjust, stimulate or otherwise influence the spinal and paraspinal tissues with the intent of restoring or maintaining the animal's health.

Homeopathy / Homotoxicology

Homeopathy is a field of healing pioneered by german physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Dr. Hahnenmann observed that when small amounts of medicines were given the body responded in a healing manner. He coined the Law of Similars, which states that like cures like. The word homeopathy literally means "homo=same and pathy = disease. In homeopathy we give very small quantities of agents that stimulate the bodies natural defenses and lead a patient to begin to heal itself. Research has shown that homeopathy works on animals, people and even plants and is very safe to use because the remedies ar not toxic. Patients taking homeopathic remedies can experience short term worsening of symptoms as their bodies activate healing and discharge toxins from their system. Only recently has scientific research been able to accurately measure the effects of homeopathic remedies on the body and the new field is called nanopharmacology. This word means " small drugs" and refers to studying the effect of miniscule amounts of substances on the body's energy systems.

Homotoxicology is an exciting method of helping patients get better and stay better. We believe this is the healing technology of the new century. Homotoxicology is a new field discovered and codified by another German doctor named Hans Heinrich Reckeweg. It is a biological therapy meaning that the body is activated and that the remedies do not harm the body. The prime axiom of homotoxicology is that all disease is the body's attempt to get well by excreting or walling off toxins. As we live toxins are encountered from the environment and generated by our metabolic processes. If these are not properly neutralized and excreted, then tissue damage can occur and illness is the result.

A patient's disease can be classified into one of six phases depending upon the level of tissue intoxication and damage. These phases are:

1. Excretion phase - the toxins are being actively excreted from the area. Increased tearing and nasal mucus secretion in response to air pollution is a good example. Toxins from the air enter the body and the body responds by secreting more fluids to wash the condition away.
2. Reaction phase - the toxins are slightly deeper into the tissue and causing and active inflammatory response. A pimple or boil is an example. The immune cells move into the area and respond to a toxin yielding pus, which drains the material to the outside of the body.
3. Deposition phase - deposition of the toxin into the tissues leads to changes in the structure. Conditions like warts, varicose veins, and nasal polyps are examples.
4. Impregnation phase - condensation of enzymes and further deterioration of the cell's systems leads to beginning stages of tumors, skin pigmentation changes, asthma, etc.
5. Degeneration phase - the cellular environment is so polluted that the DNA and enzymes do not function adequately and diseases result such as chronic dermatitis or ear infections with scarring, vascular disease, cardiac disease, etc.
6. Dedifferentiation phase - the cellular system is so damaged that mutations result and cancer cells begin to grow and proliferate.

Therapy for disorders in the first three phases is very rapid and effective. The doctor's intention is to try and shift the disease pattern up the list towards number one. By selecting proper remedies that help neutralize toxins and promote their excretion, a homotoxicology doctor can greatly assist patients to regain normal functioning.

When examining a patient, the doctor is attempting to locate the presence of toxins and dysfunction in the body. Physical examination, history and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, urinalysis, radiographs and ultrasound assist the doctor. Each area of disease is actually the body working to get well.

Once a disease pattern is recognized, then a customized therapeutic program is initiated. These treatment programs usually involve creating a safe space for the patient, ensuring that toxin ingestion from the diet, water and air are diminished, and providing adequate nutrition in the form of good food and nutritional supplements needed to assist the body in recovery. Specific biological therapies are selected to aid the body in toxin mobilization and excretion. Patients take the remedies and recheck at regular intervals to monitor their progress.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is the largest and most commonly used branch of chinese medicine. The two disciplines of herbal medicine and acupuncture are very complementary. Herbal medicine relies heavily upon Zang Fu organ physiology and pathology to prescribe herbs, while acupuncture is a broader field. In cases where a patient can be understood from a Zang Fu perspective, chinese herbal medicine can be integrated seamlessly with acupuncture to perpetuate at home the energetic stimulus provided through the acupuncture needle in the clinic.

Chinese herbal medicine originated as a form of dietary therapy. Single herbs were added to various dishes to augment the effects of their ingredients on the Ying and Yang of the body. Later, herbs were consumed separately, and eventually as formulas where the ingredients mitigated each other's side effects while contributing to a united therapeutic thrust. One advantage of chinese herbs was that they allow the practitioner to make the leap form treatment to prevention, since a response to certain herbal formulas implies certain foods may also be supplied that share the same energetic. The ability to equate herbs with food thus allows the practitioner to practice the highest form of medicine by preventing problems as opposed to just solving them.
